Last updated: 29 June 2017
Day 1: Borobudur & Prambanan - by night train to Malang
Be ready for this impressive cultural day. First is the most famous Borobudur temple. The Borobudur is located 42 km northwest of Yogyakarta. This 8th century Mahayana Buddhist monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. The temple is decorated with 2672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. Impressive? Take your time, feel the energy and relax.
Then, you travel southeast to the Prambanan temple. This is a mighty 9th century Hindu complex.
If time is sufficient, we drive to Yogyakarta's city center and visit Ngasem traditional bird market, Tamansari water palace, and to complete the trip you visit the batik and silver industry in Kotagede.
Then you get back to the hotel for a short rest, as the Bima Executive train departs at 00:52 - early morning - to Malang. The driver will drop you at the train station.
Day 2: Malang - Free program
You will arrive in Malang around 08:15. You will be picked up at the train station and brought to Kampong Tourist or Hotel Helios. You can have a rest or (for example) explore Malang. Although Malang city is 'only' one hundred years old, it has enough to offer to keep you exited for at least one day.
Day 3: Madakaripura waterfalls - Bromo area
You will be waited for on your third day. First, you will visit Singosari temple in the village with the same name. It will be a short drive. Next on your list are the Madakaripura waterfalls at about 2 hours driving from Singosari. Be ready to get wet!!! Then, you will continue to Cemara Lawang village. This village has a view over the caldera of Mt. Bromo and the volcano itself. After checking in into your hotel, you have some time to explore the Hindu village and to see the sunset.
Day 4: Mt. Bromo sunrise tour - village Sempol
Wake up at 03:00. Have a cup of coffee or tea before leaving to Mt. Pananjakan. Mt. Pananjakan is one of the highest viewpoints in the area. Enjoy the scenery over Mt. Bromo while the sun rises. Then you will descend to the Sea of Sand to see the active volcano Bromo and its crater.
After enjoying Bromo, you will be heading back to Cemara Lawang to have breakfast. After a nice shower and checking out, you continue your trip via Arak-Arak Hill to Bondowoso and the Ijen Plateau to spend the night. The plateau is actually a coffee plantation. You still have time to take a bath in a hot spring mini pool and to visit the coffee factory. The factory is only active during the coffee season.
Day 5: Ijen crater lake - drop Ketapang harbor ( ferry port to Bali )
Not that early today.... Just at 05:00 you will be driven to Paltuding. From Paltuding it is a 3 km walk, that will take you at least 1 hour, up hill to the Ijen crater lake. You will meet many sulfur miners who carry sulfur in baskets on their shoulders. They carry the sulfur down the hill to the weighing area just behind the parking area.
Once you explored Ijen crater lake, you can walk back to your car. The driver is waiting for you. It takes about 1,5 hours - via Licin village - to the harbor in Ketapang. In Ketapang you can take the ferry to Bali.
