This tour package in East Java tours to mount Bromo, an active volcano in a superb landscape, kawah Ijen or Ijen crater lake in Banyuwangi regency and to the hardly visited Sukamade beach where turtles come ashore - almost daily - to lay their eggs.
Day 1: Midnight start: Yogyakarta to Malang by night train - Bima express 01:00 early morning
Your tour starts very very early in the 'morning'. The executive train Bima departs at 00:52 at train station Yogyakarta Tugu. You will arrive in Malang around 08:15.
You will be picked up at the train station in Malang and brought to our hostel Kampong Tourist to have breakfast at the top floor with splendid views over Malang and the surrounding mountains. After breakfast and some freshening up, you're ready to enjoy your day.
The driver will ride you to Singosari temple. This is a small temple that stands amidst modern houses. It is the only clear vestige of the ancient city of Singhasari. This city was the residence of the kings of the Tumapel-Singhasari dynasty (1222 - 1292). After the fall of the kingdom of Tumapel-Singhasari the place remained important. Kings of the Majapahit dynasty (1292 - 1500) sometimes went to Singosari to hunt in the forests and to pay their respects to their ancestors.
After you visited Singosari temple, the driver brings you to the Madakaripura waterfalls. It will be a 2.5 hours drive. Relax and enjoy. From the waterfalls it is just a short drive to Cemara Lawang, a village overlooking the area of the active volcano Bromo. After you checked in into your hotel, you are free to explore the area or just relax in your hotel (Café or Bromo Permai). You also will have some time to find yourself a spot for the sunset.
Day 2: Mt. Pananjakan - Mt. Bromo - Bondowoso
An early morning call will wake you up at 03:30. Have a cup of coffee or tea to wake up before leaving to Mt. Pananjakan. This mountain is one of the highest viewpoints in the area at 2770 m. Enjoy the scenery over Mt. Bromo while the sun rises. When you are ready, it is time to descend to the Sea of Sand, enjoy it while crossing, and to see the active volcano Bromo and its crater.
After you met with your driver again, he will bring you back to Cemara Lawang. Have your breakfast before departing to Bondowoso. You will travel via Arak Arak Hill, where you can have lunch (not included) with a view. After arriving in Bondowoso there might be some time left to relax and swim at the pool of your hotel.
Day 3: Ijen trekking - Sukamade turtle beach
At 03:00 you will depart to Paltuding. It takes about 2 hours while driving through plantations and rain forest. Paltuding is the point from where you start trekking to mount Ijen. It will take about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to conquer the 3 km to get to Ijen crater lake. On the edge of the crater you can enjoy a scenic panorama over the most acidic lake in the world. Besides, you can see a lot of sulphur miners with loads up to 100 kg on their shoulders walking up the rim and down the slopes of the mountain.
After you enjoyed the Ijen crater lake, we drive through Pesanggaran village to the protected Sukamade turtle beach, an unspoiled three kilometers of white sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean. While driving, you will pass the extensive and famous plantations of East Java and the mountain rage of the Meru Betiri National Park. After you've arrived, you still have time to visit the village near Sukamade beach, where you can witness local people making brown sugar. In the evening you will be guided by a ranger to find sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. A female turtle lays more than one hundred eggs. She usually comes ashore around 19:30 and returns to the sea around midnight. You spend the night in a basic guest house in Meru Betiri National Park (no other options available).
Day 4: Sukamade - Ketapang (port to take the ferry to Bali)
After breakfast you can further explore the surroundings of Sukamade, and if you are lucky you can release baby turtles at the beach.
Once you packed your belonging, you will be heading to the harbour in Ketapang. In Ketapang you can take the ferry to Bali. On your way to Ketapang you can stop anywhere you want, just tell your guide that is on board with you.
The estimated time of arrival in Ketapang is between 12:00 and 14:00. Please remind that Bali time is one hour ahead of Java time.
