Trekking to Java's highest: Mt. Semeru - 4 days / 3 nights
Java's highest is Mt. Semeru with 3676 m. And, it is an active volcano. Just north you will find another natural phenomenon, Mt. Bromo in an ancient caldera. Just do it!!

Day 1: Malang - Tumpang - Ranu Pane - Kalimati Camp (2,700 m ASL)
At 05.00 in the morning a 4x4 Jeep will drive to the village Ranu Pane at 2100 m. After preparing you will depart to the Kalimati Camp at 2700 m. Depending on you speed it takes between 6 and 8 hours. Hiking in a relaxed pace makes it possible to enjoy the views. Sometimes you might spot smoke erupting from mount Semeru as it is also an active volcano. You will have a small break at Ranu Kumbolo with lunch and coffee, before continuing to Kalimati.
At Kalimati you will spend the night in a tent. Dinner will be prepared while you relax and get some rest.
Day 2: Kalimati Camp - Summit Mt. Semeru (3676 m) - Ranu Pane - Cemara Lawang
It is still dark when you start climbing on rough terrain. It takes about an hour to get to Arcapada. Then it is a straightforward route. Sandy and rocky loose ground will test your stamina. Prepare to slide down when you try to go up. Most people reach the summit in about 3 hours, but it depends on your ability to keep going. After reaching the summit (Mahameru), enjoy the view from the highest mountain in Java. Every twenty minutes you can see the small-scale eruption of smoke and stones. Enjoy your achievement of this today.
The National Park's board advises to decent before noon due to gas production/smoke by the volcano Semeru.
After getting back in the Kalimati Camp, breakfast will be prepared. Have some rest after this long, beautiful and exhausting but extraordinary morning. After breakfast, of you are to Ranu Pane via a different route; via Mt. Ayek-Ayek.
After lunch, you will cross the savanna of Mt. Bromo by Jeep and be dropped in Cemara Lawang to spend the night in hotel overlooking the Bromo area.
Day 3: Mt. Pananjakan sunrise - Mt. Bromo - Ijen Plateau
Early morning you will be picked up by 4x4 Jeep to bring you to Mt. Pananjakan. Here you will see (depending on weather conditions) the sun rise beautifully over the caldera of Mt. Bromo and Mt. Semeru in the back. This magnificent view, will be printed in your memory.
After sunrise, you will descend to the Sea of Sand, and cross it to get near to the crater of Mt. Bromo. It will be a 45 minutes walk to see the landscape from the crater rim. Once back at your 4WD, you will be brought back to your hotel. After breakfast we continue to the Ijen Plateau, with a refreshing break (lunch is not included) at the beach Pasir Putih at the northern coast of East Java. If it is not yet dark upon arrival at your home stay, you can take a bath in a sulfuric hot spring, visit a waterfall and the coffee factory and see coffee seedlings.
Day 4: Paltuding - Ijen Crater Lake - drop Ketapang (ferry to Bali)
Wakey wakey! Around 04:30 you will sit in the car again. In around 1 hour you will be in Paltuding. Here you can start trekking to the crater lake. It will take around 1,5 hour to conquer the 3 kilometers to the green-blueish lake. On route you will encounter a lot of sulfur miners carrying their load down the slope.
Once back at the parking area don't forget to visit the sulfur weighing area. All sulfur miners get together to weigh their loads and get paid. After a break with a local snack, you will be driven to Ketapang where you can take the ferry to Bali.
