Day 1: Malang - Tumpang - Ranu Pane village - Kumbolo lake - Kalimati Camp (2700 m)

At 05.00 in the morning a 4wd Jeep will pick you up and drive to the Ranu Pane village at 2100 m in about 2 hours.
Prepare your belongings. What you don't need for your hike, you can store in Ranu Pane village.
Then your hike starts with Kalimati Camp at 2700 m as your goal for today. Depending on you speed you will reach the camp after 6 to 8 hours hiking. You will cross several kinds of landscapes.
Hiking in a relaxed pace makes it possible to enjoy the views. Sometimes you might spot smoke erupting from the active volcano Semeru.
You will have a short break at Kumbolo lake with a basic local lunch and coffee or tea.
At Kalimati you will spend the night in a tent. Dinner will be prepared while you relax and get some rest.

Day 2: Kalimati Camp - Summit Semeru (3676 m) - Ranu Pane village - Cemara Lawang village

It is still dark when you start climbing on rough terrain. It takes about an hour to get to Arcapada. Then it is a straightforward route. Sandy and rocky loose ground will test your stamina. Prepare to slide down when you try to go up. Most people reach the summit in about 3 hours, but it depends on your ability to keep going.
After you reached the summit (Mahameru), enjoy the view from the highest mountain in Java. Every twenty minutes you can see the small-scale eruption of smoke and stones. Enjoy your achievement of this day.
The National Park's board advises to decent before noon due to gas production/smoke by the volcano Semeru.

After getting back in the Kalimati Camp, breakfast will be prepared. Have some rest after this long, beautiful and exhausting but extraordinary morning. After breakfast, you will start your return walk to Ranu Pane village. You will cross mount Ayek-Ayek this time.
Have a local lunch in Ranu Pane village.
Then your Jeep is ready to take you to Cemara Lawang village where you will spend the night. You will cross the impressive savanna south of mount Bromo.

What to bring for you hike to the summit of Mt. Semeru

Windbreaker or jacket, sweater, gloves, ear muffs, head lamp or torch, sun block, insect repellent, (video) camera, binocular, personal toiletries, personal medicines, rain coat, sun glasses.

Day 3: Sunrise at viewpoint Pananjakan - mount Bromo - Bondowoso city

Early morning at 03:00 you will be picked up by 4wd Jeep to bring you to the viewpoint at mount Pananjakan. Here you will see the sun rise beautifully over the caldera of mount Bromo, while mount Semeru is standing tall behind the Bromo. Weather conditions determine the colours in the sky and your view.
After sunrise you will descend to the Sand Sea. This impressive sandy piece of nature you will have to cross. Ask the driver to stop if you would like to take a walk.
The Jeep will park near Luhur Poten temple. This Hindu temple is still actively being used, but most often closed when you pass.
After the Jeep parked it is a 45 minutes' walk to the top of mount Bromo. First 10 minutes is flat. Then you will have to walk up, last part by stairs. Look over your shoulder. Every now and then. The impressive landscape changes with every step you take. The awesome towering green-brownish cliffs border the caldera with the savanna and the sand sea. Take your time at the top of mount Bromo.
Once back at your Jeep, the driver will bring you back to your hotel. After breakfast and a short rest you continue to Bondowoso city. A 5 hours' drive.
The winding road bukit bintang Arak-Arak - from Probolinggo to Bondowoso - reaches 400 m. Some local restaurants offer good views to have a break for lunch (not included).
In Bondowoso you can relax in your hotel and take an energizing dive in the swimming pool.

Day 4: Bondowoso - Ijen crater lake - drop Ketapang (ferry to Bali)

Wakey wakey! Another early morning. At 03:00 you will depart to Paltuding. The drive takes 2 hours.
In Paltuding your hike to Ijen crater lake starts. It will take about 1.5 hours to reach the top of mount Ijen. While hiking you will meet the sulfur miners. Sulfur miners harvest sulfur in the crater of the active volcano, just a few steps from the most acidic lake on earth. Then they carry their loads in bamboo baskets out of the crater. Nowadays most miners reload their harvest onto a trolley to wheel it down the slopes. Those who weren't yet able to get hold of a trolley, carry their heavy loads up to 100 kg 3 km down the slopes to the sulfur weighing area just behind the parking lot.
Take your time at the top to explore and to enjoy.
The driver is waiting for you when you get back at the parking area. After a short break with a local snack, you drive in about 1.5 hours to Ketapang harbor. Here you can take the ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali. Onroute you can visit a coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall.
You will arrive around noon - 12:00 - in Ketapang harbour.
