Day 1: Yogyakarta to Malang by train Malioboro Express at 07:45

This trip starts when you set foot in the train. The Malioboro Express to Malang departs at 07:45. Not too early and not that late.... As you will arrive at 15:43 in Malang you have a day to enjoy Java's varied landscape. The train is a relaxed ride for such a long distance compared to the bus or even private transport. You can walk around, talk with others and enjoy the scenery. In Malang you will be brought to your hotel by becak.

Discovery ideas: street food like bakso, sate or nasi goreng
Hotel: a room (with shared bathroom) in Shelter Hostel Malang or a private room in Hotel Helios
Meals: welcome drink in Shelter Hostel Malang

Day 2: Breezy Malang moves at a leisurely pace

Explore Malang on your own, or with a student guide if available. Although Malang city is 'only' one hundred years old, it has plenty interesting sights to offer. During the colonial era it was a place for relaxation and refreshing, because of its cooler climate compared to other cities in Java. Most places are at walking distance, such as Tugu monument, the bird and flower market, the renovated town square, and the Chinese temple. Other interesting spots are Kampong Warna-Warni (also called Kampong Jodipan), Badut temple, the ceramic area in Dinoyo, Araya swimming pool, the Chinese area, and the Arab quarter. Enjoy some street food in the evening when the city is as vibrant as ever or go for a movie in theater Movimax in Sarinah.

Discovery ideas: 1. take a cooking class in the kampong just behind Shelter Hostel. You will shop with your cook and guide at the market, before heading to the cook's house. 2. ride your bike - see more: cycle in Tumpang village. A 3 to 4 hours ride through bottle green rice fields bordered by swaying palms, meet locals doing their daily activities, cross small bamboo bridges, and be part of daily life.
Hotela room (with shared bathroom) in Shelter Hostel Malang or a private room in Hotel Helios
Meals: breakfast at Shelter Hostel

Day 3: Bromo sunrise tour including mount Penanjakan, Sand Sea, and mount Bromo

At midnight you depart to Cemara Lawang village. You will need about 3 hours to reach the Hindu village.
Once in Cemara Lawang you will change cars to a local Jeep. The Jeep will drive in about 40 minutes to Pananjakan. Cemara Lawang will look stunning in the early morning mist seen from Pananjakan's viewpoint. Pananjakan is one of the highest viewpoints in the area.
It is cold early morning. Drink a hot cup of coffee or tea at one of the local coffee shops. Get used to temperatures between 0 and 10º Celsius. A local warm snack is recommended for the food lovers.
When the sun is about to rise, a short walk of about 150 m will lead you to the 'arena'. Choose your spot to witness the sun brightening the sky and mount Bromo. After sunrise you might warm up a bit.
Then it is time to go to the crater itself. Since Mt. Bromo is an active volcano its looks often change. The Sand Sea and the savanna that surround mount Bromo are nowhere else to be seen. Take your time walking up and down to see all stunning features the surroundings have to offer.
Once back at your Jeep, you will be escorted back to Cemara Lawang to continue your travels in the direction of the Ijen Plateau. Views at the Bukit Bintang Arak-Arak are beautiful. It might be a good moment to have your lunch (not included).

Discovery ideas: if you like to see more of the Ijen Plateau, you can decide to spend the night at the Plateau itself. There are 2 homestays: Catimor Homestay and Arabica Homestay (please read the reviews). The Plateau is a coffee plantation surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. You can see local life, the coffee plantation, the coffee factory (when season), a waterfall and relax in a sulphuric hot spring.
Hotel: Ijen View Hotel Resort & Restaurant
Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Exploration Ijen crater lake - Ketapang (port to take the ferry to Bali)

The next morning the car will bring you to Paltuding from where you can start hiking to the Ijen crater lake (kawah Ijen). The famous colored and most acidic lake on earth! It is a three kilometers hike. Depending on how fit you are, it might take you one to two hours. Enjoy as much as you can and take a wonderful rest at the lake. Don't forget to explore...
Sulphur miners are at work. Their day starts early. They get into the crater to collect solidified sulphur. Liquid sulphur pours out of ceramic pipes. Sulphur is chopped up and the lumps are put into bamboo baskets. The miners carry weights up till 100 kg out of the crater. Once at the rim the sulphur is reloaded on trolleys and then wheeled down the slopes of the volcano.
Once back at the parking area, don't forget to visit the sulphur weighing area. All sulphur is weighed and then brought to the sulphur factory in Licin village.
Then enjoy a coffee break before you get back in the car. You will be dropped of at Ketapang harbour (or let us know your next destination). You can take the ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali. Keep in mind that Bali time is one hour ahead of Java time.

Discovery ideas: 1. Ijen's blue fire is famous as it is one of the biggest blue fire areas in the world. If you would like to see the blue fire, you can discuss the options with your driver. He will know the local situation (status of the volcano, weather conditions). 2. Visit the sulphur factory in Licin village
