Day 1: Borobudur & Prambanan - by night train to Malang
Be ready for this impressive cultural day. You will be picked up at 06:00 at your hotel.
First is the most famous Borobudur temple. The Borobudur is located 42 km northwest of Yogyakarta. This 8th century Mahayana Buddhist monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. The temple is decorated with 2672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. Awesome! Take your time, feel the energy and relax.
Second is the at least as inpiring Prambanan temple. This is a mighty 9th century Hindu complex.
If time is sufficient, you can visit Yogyakarta's city center and Ngasem traditional bird market, Tamansari water palace, and to complete the trip you visit the batik and silver industry in Kotagede.
Then you can have a break, freshening up and a short rest at our crew's house. The Bima Executive train departs at 00:52 - early morning - to Malang. The driver will drop you at the train station just before departure.
Day 2: Malang - free program
You will arrive in Malang at 08:15. You will be picked up at the train station and brought by becak to our hostel. You can have a rest, explore Malang city, visit Batu - the village in the mountains - or do a cycling tour or guided city tour for example. Although Malang city is 'only' one hundred years old, it has enough to offer to keep you excited for at least a whole day.
Day 3: Madakaripura waterfalls - sunset Bromo area
At 08:00 your tour continues.
First you will visit Singosari temple in the village with the same name. It will be a one hour drive. This temple is also known under the name Kendedes temple. The temple was built in honor to the king Kertanegara, who was the last king of the Singosari dynasty. Kertanegara died in 1292.
Next on your list are the Madakaripura waterfalls at about 1.5 hours driving from Singosari. Be ready to get wet! It is said to be the highest waterfall in Java - 200 m - and to be the second highest in Indonesia. These awesome falls are an east treat as it is a short walk only.
Then you will continue to Cemara Lawang village. This village has a view over the ancient caldera in which mount Bromo rose about 40,000 years ago. You will have time to explore the Hindu village; local market, farmers fields in the hills, and to experience the sunset.
Day 4: Mount Bromo sunrise tour - Bondowoso city
Wake up at 03:00. Have a cup of coffee or tea before leaving to the viewpoint at mount Pananjakan. Enjoy the scenery and the sunrise. Weather conditions order the colours in the sky...
When ready to go, you will drive through the black ashen volcanic Sand Sea, also famous as the whispering sand. If you wish to walk, just ask your driver to stop the car.
Otherwise the driver will stop near Luhur Poten temple. It then is a 45 minutes' walk to the top of the active volcano Bromo. Take your time for this experience.
Once back at your Jeep, the driver will return to Cemara Lawang village. Have breakfast at your hotel, take a short rest to freshen up and to collect your belongings.
Then the tour continues to Bondowoso city where you will spend the night. Since it is a long drive of 5 hours, you can stop anywhere you like to stretch your legs. A break at the winding road from Probolinggo to Bondowoso is recommended. The Bukit Bintang Arak-Arak at 400 m offers great windy and fresh views.
Your hotel comes with a swimming pool and a restaurant. You also could do some discovery in this
Day 5: Bondowoso - Ijen crater lake - drop Ketapang harbor (ferry to Bali)
Today, you actually can depart any time. We recommend around 03:00 to arrive at Paltuding when the sun is about to rise. During the day it will get warmer and one has to leave Ijen crater lake before 12:00 due to toxic gas emmission by the volcano that increases during the day. But, if your prefer 05:00 or 06:00, that will also do.
The drive from Bondowoso to Paltuding takes about 2 hours.
In Paltuding your hike to Ijen crater lake starts. You will need about 1.5 hours to conquer the 3 km to the top of mount Ijen. While hiking you will meet the sulfur miners.
The miners harvest their sulfur in the crater of mount Ijen. The crater is filled with the turquoise most acidic lake on earth. In bamboo baskets on their shoulders the miners carry the sulfur out of the crater and up the rim. At the crater rim they reload their harvest on a trolley. Most miners have a trolley these days. Those who haven't still carry their harvest down Ijen's slopes to the weighing area just behind the parking lot.
Take your time...
Once back at the parking area, you will be waited for by your driver. After a short break with a local snack, you drive in about 1.5 hours to Ketapang harbor. Here you can take the ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali. On your way to the ferry, you will visit a coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall.
You will arrive around noon - 12:00 - in Ketapang harbour. The cross over to Bali takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Note: if you need a private drop off in Bali (e.g. Lovina, Denpasar, Sanur, Kuta or Ubud), please ask. We have drivers in Bali as well. At additional cost depending on the number of travelers and your final destination.
